Hope Against Malaria: Fighting the Bite in Last Mile Communities
In an effort to tackle one of Uganda’s most persistent health challenges, the Hope Against Malaria Project has emerged as a vital lifeline for the residents of Namuwongo. This initiative, a collaborative partnership between the Rotaract Club of Kampala Muyenga Breeze and the C-Care Foundation, was designed to reduce the malaria burden in one of Kampala’s most densely populated urban slums.

Supported by a $10,000 grant from Malaria Partners International (MPI) and implemented under Rotary District 9214, the project addresses a critical reality: in underserved areas like Namuwongo, malaria remains not just a health threat, but a barrier to economic and social stability.
Bridging the Gap through Strategic Objectives The mission of the Hope Against Malaria Project is built on four pillars of intervention:
- Preventive Distribution: Delivering 663 long-lasting insecticide-treated nets (LLINs) directly to those most at risk.
- Clinical Access: Providing free screenings and first-line treatment through mobile and static clinics.
- Empowering Local Leaders: Training Community Health Extension Workers (CHEWs) to ensure sustainable health monitoring.
- Community Awareness: Reaching over 20,000 residents through targeted sensitization campaigns.

Measurable Impact and Outcomes Since the project’s media launch on August 1, 2025, the results have been remarkable. Our door-to-door sensitization efforts reached 5,022 households, representing a 100.4% achievement rate against our initial targets. This granular approach revealed that 94.5% of households live near stagnant water—a significant risk factor that the project addressed through four major community clean-up exercises.
On the clinical front, the C-Care Foundation Clinic became a hub of healing. Of the 408 individuals tested, those who tested positive received immediate, effective treatment. Most notably, the referral compliance rate saw a staggering improvement—rising from 49% in August to 97% by October—a testament to the growing trust between the community and our healthcare providers.

The Road Ahead While the successes are significant, the high demand for mosquito nets and the challenges in beneficiary tracking highlight the ongoing need for support. To sustain this momentum, we recommend the introduction of beneficiary identification systems and continued procurement of preventive tools.
At C-Care Foundation, we believe that no one should suffer from a preventable disease simply because of where they live. We invite partners to join us as we expand these efforts, ensuring a malaria-free future for all.
